POSITAL recently announced the full implementation of the 2 and 4-wire versions of the single-cable BiSS Line interface for its family of motor feedback kit encoders. The combination of single-cable connectivity and the company’s cost-efficient kit encoders provides motor manufacturers and system integrators an economical way of building accurate, reliable absolute position feedback into devices such as servo-motors — including for wind turbines.

The single-cable approach to motor connectivity offers significant cost savings from reduced component count to simplified installation procedures.

The single-cable approach to motor connectivity offers significant cost savings from reduced component count to simplified installation procedures.

With the 4-wire version, there are separate wire pairs for power and data transmission, and both wire pairs are packaged in a single cable. For 2-wire implementations, modulated data signals share the conductor pair with the power supply.

By supporting both 2 and 4-wire implementations of the BiSS Line interface, POSITAL ensures compatibility with PLCs and controllers from most major manufacturers. The company also supports BiSS C multi-cable interfaces.

The interfaces for POSITAL’s kit encoders make use of the BiSS series of open-source data communications protocols, a highly functional set of technologies that offer advanced features, including Forward Error Correction. FEC, based on Reed-Solomon coding, can detect and correct transmission errors at the receiver, reducing the need for retransmission.

This ensures high availability of the interface, even under difficult environmental conditions, and makes it possible to use simple hybrid motor cables. The BiSS implementation of FEC is highly efficient, with a bus cycle time of 62.5 µs, ensuring excellent dynamic response. Device configuration is handled in a consistent manner for BiSS C, BiSS Line 2-wire and BiSS Line 4-wire implementations, allowing customers to easily migrate between the physical configurations without having to make application-level software changes.

BiSS technology can be licensed from the BiSS Association e.V at no cost.

POSITAL is expanding its line of kit encoder solutions for motion control applications to satisfy a wider range of needs faced by machine builders, system integration and motor manufacturers. Kit encoders are component-level products, designed to be built into motors or other equipment where real-time measurement of rotary position (angular displacement) or rotational speed is required.

POSITAL’s new line of kit encoders.

Compared to POSITAL’s widely used IXARC series of self-contained encoders, kit encoders typically lack sealed housings, ball bearings or separate shafts. Instead, they are intended to fit inside the host machine’s casing, with rotating components connected directly to the machine’s shaft. This results in rugged, compact installations with direct measurement of rotational position and speed.

The POSITAL kit encoder family now includes:

  • Multi-turn, Battery-Free Magnetic Kit Encoders: These provide absolute position feedback in a compact, rugged, low-maintenance package. Multi-turn models feature a rotation counter that is self-powered, eliminating the need for backup batteries. This makes these units highly reliable and virtually maintenance-free. Variants for stepper motors that feature the same mounting footprint as popular incremental encoders are available, providing motor builders with a convenient upgrade path to absolute position control. POSITAL’s magnetic kit encoders support non-proprietary communications interfaces, including SSI, BiSS C and BiSS Line.
  • Hollow Kit Encoders are designed for installations where there are benefits to having the measurement element fit around a machine’s shaft or axle. With their slim design (only 18 mm thick) and generous central opening (30 or 50 mm), these are an excellent solution for many motor installations and compact robot joints. These devices are based on a capacitive measurement technology that combines accuracy with tolerance to shock and vibration, dust and moisture and magnetic fields. Here again, battery-free multi-turn models are available.
  • Compact Incremental Optical Kit Encoders are optimized for speed control of small drives, low power motors and stepper motors. These devices are simple, robust and easy to install, with a mounting footprint that is compatible with optical kit encoders from other manufacturers. They are available with a wide range of resolutions.

Magnetic Kit encoders are currently available.

Position and motion sensor specialist POSITAL has added angled housings as a design option to its IXARC incremental encoder series.

Position and motion sensor specialist POSITAL has announced that its popular IXARC incremental encoders will be available with a special housing that features a cable entry angled at 45° to the device’s axis.

This compact design combines features of both axial and radial cable entries in a single unit, providing the installer with more flexibility when laying out the connection cable – a plus in tight spaces.

The new encoder models share the advantages of other IXARC incremental encoders. The core magnetic measurement technology is rugged and accurate, with excellent dynamic response. A wide variety of flange and shaft configurations are available, reducing the need for costly adaptors or work-around. A water and dust-tight grommet around the cable entry ensures that these devices meet IP65 level ingress protection.

The housing is 36mm in diameter and 32mm long. IXARC incremental encoders are programmable: resolution can be set anywhere from one to 16,384 pulses-per-turn in software without requiring any changes to the mechanical properties of the devices.

Similarly, pulse direction and the output driver – either Push-Pull (HTL) or RS422 (TTL) – can be defined through software parameters. Changes can be made quickly in the field or in the shop using POSITAL’s easy-to-use UBIFAST programming tool.
