Working Toward a Smarter Grid

By pcurran | November 6, 2012

Technological progress is a common external force impacting energy companies worldwide, whether it is providing an abundant supply of electricity, enabling communications and distributed intelligence at the measurement nodes in the power grid, or improving overall reliability, monitoring, and safety through disruptive technologies.

Smart grid technologies are designed to optimize the push and pull from supply and demand, and control systems are expected to be at the center of such technologies serving as intelligent devices to negotiate with one another, consumers and energy suppliers. Methodologies and standards are constantly evolving; therefore, instrument flexibility is paramount.

This webinar describes the concept of virtual instrumentation and how it provides a future-proof, advanced platform leveraging FPGA-based technology to combine multiple devices into one to achieve cost reduction, high performance and field-programmability.

Watch this webinar to learn:

  • There is no easy solution for modernizing the grid – Virtual Instruments vs. Traditional Approach
  • Smart-grid ready instrumentation that adapts as needs evolve, without asset replacement, is key for future-proofing our infrastructure
  • Power management units provide key information to monitor and measure the stability of the grid and facilitate the integration and synchronization of renewable sources such as wind and solar into the grid
