Composites One LLC was recently presented the Platinum Award by Great West Casualty Company as part of the 2017 National Safety Awards Program. This is the 16th consecutive year that the company has been named an award recipient, and the 15th Platinum Award in as many years.

Special award

The National Safety Awards Program recognizes carriers with awards based on their year-end preventable accident results.

The National Safety Awards Program recognizes carriers in similar operations (truckload and less than truckload) with awards based on their year-end preventable accident results. Carriers are eligible to receive a Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Participatory Award. This past year, the program drew more than 800 participants from across the country.

“The Composites One organization is dedicated to safety each and every day and being recognized with the Great West Platinum Award again this year is an honor we accept with pride and humility,” said Leon Garoufalis, President and COO of Composites One. “Safety is a core value at Composites One and a constant focus at all our locations. Advances in Wind workshop

The Advances in Wind workshop features hands-on demos enabling attendees to learn about advanced composites processes.

Composites One and the Closed Mold Alliance are offering a two-day workshop on advanced materials, manufacturing processes, and repair techniques for wind-energy applications.

The workshop, Advances in Wind Energy, is held in conjunction with Magnum Venus Products and IACMI–The Composites Institute, and will feature hands-on demos and dynamic presentations led by leading wind-energy professionals. The course will take place on June 5 and 6 at the National Wind Technology Center in Boulder, CO.

This is the third year in a row that Composites One and IACMI are co-presenting a workshop geared toward professionals in the wind industry.

“Of the live demos and educational workshops that we’ve presented the past few years, those focused on the wind industry have consistently drawn large crowds,” said Composites One Director of Marketing Communications Marcy Offner. “Each session has been totally different, enabling us to cover a wide variety of topics pertinent to the rapidly growing wind-energy workforce.”

At Advances in Wind Energy, attendees will:

  • See live demos of Light RTM for building a nacelle and the vacuum infusion process
  • Hear about the market drivers affecting the industry
  • Find out about the latest advancements in tapes, coatings, and high-temperature tooling
  • Learn how to select core materials for blade laminates
  • Get an overview of thermoplastics tooling, processing, and manufacturing automation
  • Explore damage-repair techniques for composite structures and more

Attendees will also have the opportunity to take a tour of the National Wind Technology Center, the leading wind-energy technology facility nationwide. Located at the base of the Rocky Mountain foothills, it occupies a 305-acre site that experiences diverse wind patterns occasionally exceeding 100 miles an hour, making it ideal for testing the reliability and performance of wind turbines.

Hands-on demos and presentations at Advances in Wind Energy will be led by subject matter experts from Composites One and the Closed Mold Alliance, a resource dedicated to helping manufacturers make a successful conversion to closed mold and other advanced processes, and IACMI. Along with Composites One, the Closed Mold Alliance founding members include Magnum Venus Products and RTM North Ltd.

Advances in Wind Energy is the second of four workshops in advanced composites being presented this year by Composites One and IACMI. Upcoming sessions include:

  • Advances in Composites Processing, University of Tennessee, Knoxville – August 21 & 22
  • Composites Hands-on Training, Dayton, OH – November 14 & 15

Composites One and the Closed Mold Alliance will provide live demos, takeaways, and tips at CAMX 2017 this September.

The Composites One and Closed Mold Alliance Demo Zone is an annual event designed to educate manufacturers about processes and technologies that can help them produce better parts more efficiently.

“What’s new at this year’s event is the amount of composites knowledge that attendees can receive in a limited amount of time,” said Marcy Offner, Director of Marketing Communications, Composites One. “Each demo will be boiled down into a succinct, dynamic watch-and-learn presentation with practical tips and takeaways that attendees can then share with their employees and co-workers.”

Each presentation will be focused on processes and products used in a key market segment, such as marine, infrastructure, power, and transportation industries.

Joining the presenters at this year’s event will be representatives from the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI), Davis Technology – Salt Lake City, and Daytona State College. Together with Composites One, the Closed Mold Alliance and their industry partners, they possess more than 70 years of combined composites expertise that attendees can draw upon, including information on industry education and manufacturing efficiencies aimed at keeping employees challenged in their jobs and workforce development.

Demos will be repeated on Tuesday and Wednesday at CAMX, giving attendees multiple opportunities to see what interests them. Thursday will be an Open House for live Q&A with technical teams. Many demos will feature systems from Magnum Venus Products (MVP) and tooling from RTM North Ltd., North America’s leading authority on Light RTM tooling. With Composites One, both MVP and RTM North are founding members of the Closed Mold Alliance – a resource dedicated to helping manufacturers successfully convert to closed mold and advanced processes.

“The Composites One and Closed Mold Alliance Demo Zone would not be possible without the expertise and support of our supplier partners,” said Offner. They include 3A Composites, Airtech Advanced Materials Group, AOC, Ashland, BYK, Chem-Trend, Chomarat, Huntsman, Lantor, Magnum Venus Products, N12 Technologies, Owens Corning, Polynt Composites USA, Inc., PolyOne, RTM North Ltd., SikaAxson, SWORL (a division of Prairie Technology Group, Inc.), United Initiators Inc., Vectorply, and CompositesWorld, the event’s media sponsor.
