Smartive, the smart technology platform provider to the clean energy industry and backed by InnoEnergy, has secured a major contract with Acciona projects to monitor 1,000 of its wind turbines. The initial engagement will run for a year, with the option to extend.

Over the period, Smartive will examine 15% of Acciona’s global wind fleet to predict technical problems before they arise and tackle current maintenance issues. Its technology will provide Acciona with accurate data that will reveal where problems exist or could occur—improving the operation of turbines and reducing maintenance costs.

Pictured is Acciona’s 183-MW El Cortijo wind farm, located in Tamaulipas. Technology platform provider Smartive has agreed to inspect 1,000 Acciona turbines on an annual contract.

“Our precise technology will transform the way Acciona monitors and manages its turbine fleet,” said Jordi Cusido, CEO of Smartive. “In fact, we can predict failures one year before they occur with an accuracy rate of over 95%—leading to over 300,000€ in savings a year per 100 turbines. So, Acciona will not only be able to gain operational control, it will reap tangible financial benefits too.

“And partnering with a global leader like Acciona opens up a world of possibilities for us as it allows us to demonstrate our technology to a worldwide audience,” Cusido added.

Smartive’s technology provides accurate data from real-time monitoring through a variety of IIOT and cloud platforms that can identify turbine problems. The company joined InnoEnergy’s Highway program in 2016, which supports early stage start-ups in their go to market phase, and is now scaling up its business—helped by access to a network of more than 400 project partners.

Mikel Lasa, CEO of InnoEnergy Iberia, the innovation engine for sustainable energy across Europe, concludes: “We are thrilled to be supporting companies like Smartive that make a tangible difference to the bottom line. This type of technology proves that Europe is a real hub of exceptional innovation, which has the genuine potential to accelerate our energy transition.”

ACCIONA obtained €186 million in attributable net profit in the first half of 2018 (+132.1% year-on-year) due both to business growth and to the capital gains on the divestment of Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants in Spain and of Trasmediterranea. Excluding capital gains (€85 million), ordinary profit amounted to €100 million (+25.6%).

Profits on the rise

In the first half of 2018, ACCIONA added a total of 359 MW of wind capacity in Mexico, Australia, Canada.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA0 increased to €618 million (+6.7%) due to the combined effect of growth in its energy (+6.7%) and infrastructure (+8.3%) divisions, the latter boosted by 31.5% growth in construction EBITDA. In comparable terms of the consolidation perimeter, EBITDA growth would have been around 13%.

Revenues totaled €3.53 billion (+4.1%) in the first half of 2018. Good performance by the energy division (+17.6%) was due to higher output in Spain and other countries.

In terms of business performance, the energy division saw revenues rise to €1.02 billion (+17.6%) while EBITDA amounted to €392 million (+6.7%). EBITDA in the Spanish business grew (+8.9%) due to higher output in the period (+13%) and despite a slight decline in wholesale prices and the negative impact of the regulatory banding mechanism.

EBITDA in international power-generation business increased by +4.8% as a result of higher production and better pricing. The addition of 359 MW of wind capacity in Mexico (183 MW), Australia (132 MW), Canada (38 MW), and India (6 MW) amply offset the impact of divesting the CSP plants (250 MW). Consolidated output totaled 9,788 GWh (+12.3%).
