Wind resource assessment at -40 degrees

By Michelle Froese | February 23, 2017

Vaisala’s newest case study shows how a top Finnish wind developer and power producer used the Vaisala Triton Wind Profiler to overcome a challenging climate. The Triton Wind Profiler is an advanced remote-sensing system that provides accurate wind measurement data across the entire blade sweep of today’s large wind turbines.

Triton’s robust design, rugged construction, and low-power requirements keep it running even in extreme climates and remote locations. Download the case study here.

The northern reaches of Finland are extremely challenging for wind measurement campaigns. Harsh winter weather, off-grid locations, freezing temperatures (which routinely reach –40°C), and low solar availability during the polar night make it difficult and expensive to keep instruments functional and powered-up.

When the Finnish company, Puhuri, began to plan for turbines with higher and higher hub heights, it quickly became apparent that an advanced wind-measurement system was required to improve the quality of the annual energy projections.

After trying out more than one remote sensing system, Puhuri settled on the Vaisala Triton Wind Profiler because of the system’s ease of use and reliability.

Download the case study, “Wind Resource Assessment North of the Arctic Circle,” to learn how Puhuri uses the Triton Wind Profiler to:

  • Get accurate hub-height data to reduce uncertainty in energy projections
  • Accelerate the development pipeline
  • Minimize costly site visits, fueling, and maintenance

“Vaisala’s Triton is the only practical way to reduce the uncertainty in our annual energy projections, allowing us to improve the profitability of our development process,” said Teppo Hilakivi, Technical Expert at Puhuri.
