The Timken Company announced that it is designing and supplying main shaft bearings for GE Renewable Energy’s Haliade-X wind turbine. Each Haliade-X turbine will have a capacity of up to 14 MW and be able to generate up to 74 GWh of clean energy a year. Initial Haliade-X installations are scheduled to begin in 2023.

“We are honored to play a significant part in taking wind energy to the next level with this milestone in turbine technology,” said Andreas Roellgen, Timken vice president, Europe, Asia, Africa. “As turbine manufacturers like GE continue to push the limits on performance to expand renewable energy options, we’re there to help them overcome challenges with our technical problem-solving expertise and long history of engineering innovation.”

Timken first collaborated on a wind project with GE to supply the bearings used for Haliade 1, the 6-MW precursor to Haliade-X. When operational later this year, the Parc du Banc de Guérande, an offshore wind farm off the coast of France, will consist of 80 Haliade 1 turbines equipped with Timken bearings.

To support future growth, Timken has made targeted capital investments, including more than $75 million through 2022 to increase renewable energy capabilities across its footprint. With 12% of total company sales in 2021, renewable energy represents Timken’s single-largest end-market sector.

ONYX Insight has launched a new hardware solution that predicts where and when costly pitch bearing failures occur in wind turbines.

This type of failure is a significant problem in the wind industry. Pitch bearings connect the rotor hub to the blades and experience high loading during the life of a turbine. There are many different modes of failure and the costs associated with fixing the faults are high, particularly if the turbine is offshore. In the most extreme cases a pitch bearing failure can lead to the catastrophic loss of a blade.

Based on its condition monitoring system ecoCMS, ONYX Insight has developed ecoPITCH, a monitoring solution to identify pitch bearing faults before they occur.

ecoPITCH uses sensor hardware permanently installed in the hub and, through data analytics, can detect early warning signs of impending pitch bearing failure. The system uses multiple data streams and signal processing techniques, enabling operators to understand when faults are going to occur in this critical part of the turbine that is difficult to monitor.

“This is a really exciting and forward-thinking addition to ONYX Insight’s suite of tools and services, which are all geared toward improving turbine efficiency and reducing maintenance costs,” said Dr. John Coultate, Head of Product Development, ONYX Insight. “Pitch bearings are particularly difficult to monitor in real time, and our customers want absolute confirmation as to which bearings to change and when. We now have a revolutionary offering for assessing and comparing damage on any turbine or wind farm, which has the potential to save operators and owners significant capital in unscheduled maintenance.”
