Joint partners, Poseidon & Gearbox Express, ship first gearbox with integrated oil-monitoring

Through Poseidon’s online data portal, GBX can quickly assess the health state of all their assets and deploy service teams to perform preventative maintenance activities now including condition-based oil changes.

Through Poseidon’s online data portal, Gearbox Express can quickly assess the health state of all their assets and deploy service teams to perform preventative maintenance activities now including condition-based oil changes.

Poseidon Systems, LLC announced Gearbox Express shipped the industry’s first gearbox to include a direct-from-factory installed, integrated oil-monitoring system that eliminates the need for periodic oil sampling. Gearbox Express, North America’s largest independent supplier of gearbox assemblies for the wind-turbine industry, and Poseidon worked together to design an integrated sensor package shipped already installed on the gearbox.

“We are delighted that an industry leader like Gearbox Express has selected Poseidon System’s comprehensive online oil-monitoring system to provide real-time health monitoring of their flagship product,” said Mark Redding, President of Poseidon Systems. “Online oil quality and debris monitoring offers our customer’s many benefits, not the least is the ability to reduce if not completely eliminate the need to perform periodic oil sampling.”

Redding added: “Gearbox Express has recognized these capabilities and by directly integrating the technology are allowing their customers to reap the benefits.”

Poseidon Systems will supply the oil-monitoring equipment and services for all Gearbox Express remanufactured gearboxes. The integrated system includes Poseidon’s Trident QW3100 oil quality and water contamination monitor, the DM4500 metallic wear debris monitors, and a Trident AP2200 data collector and communication device, and Poseidon Live for online data analysis and remote monitoring.

The combination of these technologies provides an easy-to-install up tower, easy-to-use gearbox condition monitoring capability. Ultimately, the technology provides the customer with reductions in equipment maintenance costs, repair costs, and downtime while allowing for safe gearbox life extension through real-time fault progression monitoring.

“It is our belief that metallic debris monitoring provides the earliest, most reliable, most cost-effective gearbox condition monitoring solution,” said Bruce Neumiller, CEO of Gearbox Express. “We selected Poseidon based on their ability to provide an exceptional sensing capability that is coupled with an affordable remote monitoring and analysis service. This technology is one of many enhancements included in Revolution gearboxes and is aligned with our belief that our customers deserve the highest quality gearbox and support available in the industry.”
